Our Curriculum Plans

The statement attached below (The Langdon Curriculum) outlines our thinking about the Langdon Curriculum - what we do, why we do it and how we do it. This is a good starting point for anyone wanting to know what their child will learn and why. If you want to know more about our curriculum, please contact the head teacher who will be able to help.

The Reception children follow a broad curriculum based on the Early Learning Goals; this forms the final part of the Foundation Stage.  From Year 1 (aged 5) the children follow the National Curriculum. This has 3 core subjects – English, Mathematics and Science and 7/8 foundation subjects (depending upon Key Stage) – History, Design and Technology, Computing, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Development and Languages (for Key Stage 2).

Reading

At Langdon we teach phonics, using the Sounds Write scheme, in order to help children with early reading skills. We teach comprehension skills, inference and deduction through Dandelion reading books for early readers and also using real books, texts, images and videos, often linked to our learning in Integrated Learning lessons.  Each class reads with the teacher at least four times per week in Guided Reading lessons and we encourage children to read at home in order to practice what they have been taught.  To see the progression of knowledge that children will acquire in reading, click on the link below.

History

History is a firm favourite in the teaching plan at Langdon.  We love learning about local history such as the impact of the Second World War on the town of Dover, as well as history from long ago and far off places such as Ancient India or the Shang Dynasty in China.  See how history is taught to each class by clicking the link below.
